World-Class Retail, Done the Local Way

Today’s physical retail is no longer just a place to shop - it’s a space with meaning, designed to express a brand’s mission. Whether that mission is creativity, sustainability, or community, brands are increasingly using retail locations to tell their story. The most inspiring destinations now offer authentic experiences, blending local spirit with brand narrative, transforming industrial spaces into entertainment hubs, and turning pop-ups and museum-style exhibitions into the new faces of retail.

One of the journeys we take you on through our favourite retail spaces around the world is Barnhill Stores - a store that has given Dublin a true gourmet stage: curated, styled, and entirely dedicated to the art of everyday shopping.

Winner of the Retail Excellence Ireland National Food Store of the Year 2023, Barnhill Stores proudly stands as one of the finest convenience stores in the world. With a strong focus on fresh food excellence, carefully curated product selection, and interior design fully imagined by owner Dave Whelan, this store is a true retail gem.

Located in the upmarket neighbourhood of Dalkey, Dublin, the 5,000 sq ft space - previously a Centra store - has been transformed into a curated department store for artisan food brands. Inside, you’ll find full-service fresh food counters featuring FX Buckley butchers, George’s fishmonger, Sheridan’s cheese, and a theatrical Neighbourhood Market deli and sandwich counter. Coffee is supplied by Two Fifty Square coffee roasters.

Complementary suppliers like The Butler’s Pantry, known for high-quality ready meals, are presented elegantly in-store, using their original branding.

Interior design and merchandising strike a balance of sophistication and warmth, with carefully chosen colours, lighting, premium finishes, and playful touches like the fret-cut tree with silhouetted figures. The off-licence section, featuring a fine wine room, is particularly impressive.

This is independent retail at its very best - combining local character, global standards, and a dedication to every detail.
